What is Guided Imagery?
Guided Imagery is purposeful imagination (using all the imagined senses) to achieve a specific positive outcome. Our bodies do not know the difference between real and imagined scenarios.
Studies using fMRI’s show that whether a subject actually experiences something or only imagines it, the brain activity recorded by the fMRI is the same.
Because your body and mind physiologically respond to imagery, it can help you:
- plan positive outcomes by experiencing them first through imagery
- enhance immune function, improve health, speed up recovery
- release emotion and heal
- Hypnosis in its simplest form is suggestion-oriented: the hypnotist uses his/her voice to speak specific words and phrases to suggest a positive outcome. Imagery is often used within and in conjunction with hypnosis.
- Guided Imagery is visual and sensory-oriented. The hypnotist guides you through a visual journey for a specific purpose (such as relaxation, health, performance, emotional release) using all the senses: imagined sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste.
